Former world champions Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld have led the tributes to Wayne Mardle’s family, following the death of his wife Donna ahead of the World Darts Championship.

Donna Mardle died aged 52 earlier this week, following a short illness, with Sky Sports Darts announcing her passing during coverage of the opening day of this year’s contest at the Alexandra Palace.

“Wayne is the heart and soul of everything we do here at Sky Sports Darts, but the heart of his world, his wonderful wife Donna, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness,” presenter Emma Paton said during coverage.

“We will be remembering Donna throughout this tournament. Wayne, you are in our thoughts, you’re in our hearts, we love you very much and we will see you very soon.”

The PDC released a short statement after her passing was announced, which said: “All our thoughts and condolences are with Wayne Mardle and his family, after the passing of his wife Donna earlier this week.”

The darting world was quick to send their condolences on social media, with players – past and present – and fans sending wishes of support to Mardle and his family.

Taylor, a 16-time world champion, said on X: “So sad to hear of the passing of Donna Mardle. Thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.”

Five-time world champion Van Barneveld added: “Very shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Donna Mardle this evening. Sending condolences and thoughts to you @Wayne501Mardle and family.”

Former BDO world champion Stephen Bunting, also part of this year’s line-up, posted: “My thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences are with Wayne and his family following the sad loss of his beloved wife and best friend Donna.”

Steve Beaton, who ended a run of 33 consecutive World Darts Championship appearances when he failed to qualify, said: “Life is so short. Love you pal.”
